The world’s premier halloween event, Halloween Horror Nights is a beloved annual event at Universal featuring terrifying haunted houses, sinister scare zones and outrageous live entertainment. With its own brand identity and unique voice, embodying the HHN character as a writer is scary fun.

Graveyard Games Chatbot

"Graveyard Games" was a haunted house experience at Halloween Horror Nights 2019. As you were waiting in line, a projection on the wall shows you the Facebook Live stream of two punk teenagers who thought it'd be a good idea to mess around in the graveyard where ghosts vigilantly watch over children at play.

Do cemeteries give you the willies? Then this one will give you nightmares. 

In the Ascension Parish Cemetery, it’s normal to find teens playing amongst the tombstones. In the house, you would have found yourself witnessing the repercussions of the disrespectful antics of two teens who have awakened the spirits of the dead.

But before you entered the haunted house, there was a unique opportunity to chat with a few of the local teens and storytellers of the town—for the first time ever. All you needed was your phone and Facebook Messenger to take you to the Halloween Horror Nights page. You could chat with the a kid named Tommy to learn the history and spooky legends the cemetery keeps before you even went into the house. Better to be prepared for what awaits than finding yourself coming to a “dead” end.

We developed the story, experience and creative assets that lived within the chatbot. We created authentic-looking historical documents to bring the story to life. I wrote the chatbot script from a complex point of view, designed to bring HHN-goers even deeper into the storyline of the house. The graphic elements you see below were woven into the story to add interest—and intrigue.

Because this is the first visual asset that the user will see, we wanted it to give insight into not only the haunts of the graveyard, but background into the town itself. The main story gives the user hints that the graveyard is haunted, and the rest of the paper is just fun stories, some containing easter eggs about more stories to follow.
